Atlas Orthogonal

What is Atlas Orthogonal (AO)?

Atlas Orthogonal (AO) is a technically advanced, scientific procedure that uses a light force instrument to adjust the Atlas bone.

The Atlas is the first cervical vertebrae (C1). It is a transitional segment between the skull and the spine. This 2 ounce bone supports the base of the skull which weighs 9-17 pounds and encircles the area of the brain stem and spinal cord.

It also protects two arteries (the vertebral arteries) that transport blood and oxygen to a good portion of your brain. The Atlas bone supports the weight of the head most efficiently in the orthogonal position. If the skull is not properly balanced on your neck, or not aligned properly, there can be shifting of your spine and inhibit your body's ability to achieve optimal health.

How does the doctor determine if my Atlas is not aligned properly?

Using digital X-ray in the clinic, Dr. Kort can complete an X-ray exam, analyze, and review the relationship between the skull, Atlas, and the cervical spine.

How is the correction (adjustment) made?

After using the X-ray images to measure the deviation of the Atlas from the ideal orthogonal position, Dr. Kort calibrates the Atlas Orthogonal percussion adjusting instrument providing a "tailor made" adjustment to the Atlas (C1). The stylus of the instrument lightly touches the skin on the neck when the doctor makes the correction.

Does the procedure hurt?

No! This is a very gentle and specific correction. Patients often comment (initially) that nothing happened. However, within a short period of time report a sensation of relief and well being. With what Dr. Kort is now more aware of is the relationship of the Atlas adjustment and nerve communication with the rest of the body. Patients often rest for 15-20 minutes after the adjustment.
